When rental coverage runs out before your car is fixed

Guidance from an auto claims specialist

Your car may still be in the shop when rental coverage stops. Your own policy may cap rental pay with a daily amount, a set number of days or a total dollar limit. A claim against another driver’s insurer can work differently. Find out who is paying before you sign a rental agreement. [1, 2]

Find out exactly how much rental help you have

Ask for the daily rate the coverage pays, the total limit and the start date. You’ll also want to know the exact event that stops payment. See whether taxes, fees, fuel, deposits and extra insurance products are covered. Picking a car with a higher daily rate can use up a total benefit faster. Ask how much has been spent so far and the date you could start owing the balance. [1, 2]

Shop delays and your rental clock

If parts or repairs fall behind, ask the shop for an updated finish date. Pass it to the claim handler before the rental money runs out. Ask whether the claim allows any extension. Don’t count on one being automatic. [1, 2]

You may have to pay out of pocket for a while. If so, compare cheaper ways to get around. Options include a lower cost rental, rides, transit or a borrowed car. Check insurance coverage before you drive someone else’s car. [1, 2]

Returning the rental without surprises

Ask how soon the rental must go back once the repair is done or a total loss offer comes in. When you return it, take photos of its condition and the fuel level. Hold on to the receipt and the final bill. You might be billed for days after the date the insurer said it would pay. If that happens, compare the written approval with the rental invoice. Then ask both companies to explain the gap. [1, 2]

What to ask your claim handler

  1. How much rental benefit do I have left as of today?
  2. What specific event stops the payments?
  3. Who has to sign off on an extension?

Get the end date in writing

Ask for your rental end date and the dollar amount left, and get both in writing. [1]
