Why a hard hit may call for measuring your car's structure
A collision repair engineer weighs in
For survivors and families3 min read
The force of a crash can spread past the dent you can see. A door gap or bumper cover can look fine even when mounting points underneath have shifted. Structural measurement compares certain points on the car with the vehicle maker’s dimensions. It helps the shop find damage, plan the repair and confirm the result. [1, 2]
Not every crash calls for this work. The impact itself and the maker’s instructions guide that choice. [1, 2]
Find out why the check is needed
Tell the shop if a wheel got pushed out of place, a door jammed or the car pulled after the crash. Ask which structural points they’re measuring and why. The shop may need to remove damaged trim to reach those points. The measurement record should show whether the points were within the maker’s specifications before the repair. [1, 2]
Learn the order of the repair
If the structure is outside the maker’s specifications, the shop must follow the maker’s repair method. Some parts can be straightened. Others must be replaced, or joined only at approved spots. When the work is done, ask for the final measurements. Getting the structure back in line may also affect wheel alignment. It can affect camera or sensor calibration later, too. [1, 2]
Look past the shiny paint
A smooth finish can’t tell you whether the structure underneath is right. If structural work was done, ask for written records of the repair steps and the measurement results. The shop should be able to explain how it confirmed the alignment. If it can’t, get a clear answer before you accept the car. [1, 2]
Questions about the structural check
- Did you suspect or find structural damage?
- Which of the maker’s dimensions did you check?
- Can I have the final measurement report?
Ask if measuring is in the plan
Find out whether the repair plan includes structural measurement, and why. [1]
