When part of a finger goes numb after a cut

Help for a numb finger from a hand surgeon and an occupational hand therapist

Tiny nerves that carry feeling run along each side of every finger. A cut from glass can sever one. The skin may heal while part of the finger stays numb or feels oddly sensitive. With less feeling, you may not notice heat, sharp edges or pressure as easily. If a sharp cut leaves a clear patch of numbness, have your hand checked. Do this even if the finger still moves. [1]

Map where the feeling changed

Tell your doctor exactly when the numbness started. Describe which side of which finger feels different. Mention any weakness, severe pain or a finger that feels cold. Your doctor can compare feeling on both sides of the finger and check movement and blood flow. Besides a nerve, a cut can hurt a tendon or blood vessel. [1]

You may not need nerve tests right away. Often the exam and the spot of the wound guide the first decision. [1]

What nerve recovery can look like

Some nerve injuries heal without surgery. A nerve that was cleanly cut may need repair. The repair reconnects the nerve’s pathway. Feeling comes back only as the nerve fibers grow back over time. Recovery may not be complete. [1]

Hand therapy can help you protect a fingertip that has lost feeling. Later on, it can help with stiffness or extra sensitivity. Ask what change to expect and how it will be checked. Find out when you should be seen again. [1]

Keep the numb finger safe for now

Until feeling improves, look at your fingertip while you cook, wash or use tools. Don’t test it with sharp things or very hot water. Get urgent care if the finger turns pale or cold or the bleeding won’t stop. The same goes for a deep cut along with less movement. [1]

What to ask about the numb spot

  1. Does the numb area match a cut digital nerve, one of the small nerves in the finger?
  2. Would a repair likely give a better result?
  3. How should I protect my fingertip while it heals?

Draw the numb area

Draw a simple outline of your finger and shade the part that feels numb. Bring the sketch to your appointment. [1]
