Why a broken finger after a crash needs a careful look

What hand surgeons and hand therapists watch for in alignment and grip

Next to other crash injuries, a broken finger may seem small. Even so, it can get in the way of gripping, dressing and work. Finding the break is only the start. The bone has to heal at a workable length and without a twist, with the tendons, nerves and joints still working. If the hurt finger overlaps the one beside it when you gently curl your hand, the bone may be twisted. A twist like that needs to be corrected. [1]

Check how the finger lines up

Find out which bone and which joint are involved and whether the broken pieces shifted. Have your doctor compare how the finger lines up with your hand flat and with a gentle fist. Tell the team about numbness, a cut, or a joint you can’t bend or straighten. A broken finger can come with a tendon or ligament injury, which would change the treatment. [1]

Keep the finger safe without letting it stiffen

Treatment may mean a splint, using the finger next to it for support, or surgery. Ask which joints have to stay still and which ones can move. Leave the splint on until you’re told to take it off. At the same time, don’t let the joints you’re allowed to move sit idle for weeks. A hand therapist can teach you safe exercises and help keep swelling down. Find out when you can grip, lift and get back to work tasks. [1]

Changes that mean you should go back

Get urgent care if the finger turns pale or blue, feels cold or develops new, marked numbness. An open wound or bone showing through the skin also needs urgent care. Call the hand team if the splint rubs sores into your skin or the finger gets more crooked. Do the same if pain jumps sharply or you lose a movement you could do before. [1]

Ask these at your hand visit

  1. Is the finger twisted, or does the break reach a joint surface?
  2. Which joints can I move right now?
  3. When will you recheck my grip, swelling and alignment?

Learn the safe fist check

Ask the hand team to show you how to make a gentle fist safely and check how your fingers line up. [1]
